AIX-EN-PROVENCE: energy management of boilers in public buildings
Aix-en-Provence is committed to an smart city approach and is taking steps to improve the energy performance of its buildings…
With nearly 5,000 sensors deployed, Veolia’s Energy & Decarbonisation activity leverages IoT to ensure reliable monitoring of its heating installations, automate data collection, and improve the performance of its energy contracts.

Veolia
Veolia is a major player in environmental services, particularly in energy, water and waste management.
Veolia’s Connected Solutions entity supports the Group’s various business units, local authorities and industrial players in deploying IoT solutions in France and internationally.
For over 5 years, it has been working with Veolia Energy & Decarbonisation to deploy connected solutions across their operation and energy performance contracts.
Today, nearly 5,000 sensors are deployed in the field to monitor installations.
In the field, managing installations relies on a wide range of data: temperatures, consumption levels, equipment operating status, and more.
This information is essential to ensure energy performance and maintain service quality. However, it must first be effectively collected, centralised and exploited—especially in a multi-site context.
With this in mind, several areas for optimisation were identified:
At scale, these challenges become strategic. It becomes essential to rely on tools capable of industrialising data management while remaining easy to deploy and operate.
IoT has proven to be a well-suited solution for scaling the monitoring of installations.
It enables:
A solid foundation for efficiently managing thousands of assets across the territory.
To address these challenges, Veolia’s Connected Solutions entity has built a complete ecosystem combining sensors, connectivity and a management platform.

Adeunis sensors were selected for their ability to integrate easily into existing installations while ensuring reliable data transmission.

In practice, the IoT deployment is fully integrated into the installations operated by the teams. From boiler rooms to substations and distribution networks, sensors are deployed at key points of the system.
They enable continuous monitoring of:
Veolia’s Energy & Decarbonisation activity now benefits from a continuous and reliable view of its installations.
Monitoring temperatures, water, gas and electricity consumption, as well as equipment operation, enables teams to act faster and more efficiently on a daily basis.
Key benefits:
✔ Significant reduction in time spent on field readings, thanks to automated remote data collection
✔ Fewer unnecessary site visits, as teams can remotely identify situations requiring intervention
✔ Reliable, continuously available data for more precise installation management
✔ Improved responsiveness to anomalies, thanks to faster detection of deviations
✔ Overall optimisation of energy and operational performance
IoT has become a key lever for securing contractual commitments and improving service quality.
Beyond simple monitoring, this project demonstrates IoT’s ability to sustainably transform energy operations.
By providing reliable, continuous and directly actionable data, the solution enables teams to improve efficiency, anticipate deviations and manage installations with greater precision.
An approach that paves the way for more efficient, more responsive management—fully aligned with the challenges of large-scale energy contracts.
