Fewer gateways, reliable meter reading: IWIK deploys the IRIS LoRaWAN solution in Berlin

With nearly 800 meters deployed across two residential buildings in central Berlin, Iwik Energiemanagement GmbH needed to ensure reliable energy data collection in a complex urban environment.

To secure data transmission, the company relies on a LoRaWAN infrastructure based on IRIS LoRaWAN gateways, ensuring stable and continuous remote meter reading.

Iwik Energiemanagement GmbH provides comprehensive energy data management solutions for commercial buildings, covering metering, installation, monitoring and billing for heating, cooling, water and electricity consumption. The company also supports its customers with energy monitoring and long-term energy cost reduction strategies.

Founded in 2010 as a spin-off from the industrial automation specialist Iwik GmbH, Iwik combines expertise in metering, automation and digitalisation. One of its first major projects was the complete deployment of the metering infrastructure for Terminals 1 and 2 at Frankfurt Airport, followed by the management of the entire airport installation.

Iwik has also developed its own software platform for energy meter data collection and analytics, which is continuously enhanced and optimised. IWIK supports landmark buildings in Frankfurt and throughout Germany. Since March 2023, the company has been part of the Officium Group.

CHALLENGE: Unreliable remote meter reading in a complex radio environment

Iwik Energiemanagement GmbH specialises in the collection and management of energy data for residential and commercial buildings.

As part of a project located in central Berlin, close to the Bundestag, the company deployed a remote meter reading infrastructure across two newly built residential buildings arranged around an inner courtyard.

The site includes approximately 800 meters covering heating, cooling, hot water and cold water consumption. The key challenge was to ensure reliable and continuous data collection in a dense urban environment.

Very early in the project, Iwik encountered significant limitations with the Wireless M-Bus technology traditionally used for remote meter reading. Data reception was affected by a complex radio environment, resulting in incomplete data collection and insufficient reliability for billing and energy monitoring purposes.

The challenge therefore became structural: redesigning the remote metering architecture to secure data transmission and collection.

SOLUTION: migrating to an IRIS-based LoRaWAN infrastructure

To address these challenges, Iwik chose to deploy a LoRaWAN infrastructure based on Adeunis IRIS gateways.

The project was initially designed around 10 gateways, based on the site’s previous infrastructure.

However, during the testing phase, the approach evolved. With only 5 IRIS gateways, Iwik was already able to achieve coverage for the vast majority of the 800 meters.

The gateways were installed in a mixed indoor/outdoor configuration, taking advantage of the buildings’ layout and the inner courtyard to optimise radio propagation.

Integration: a standardised IoT architecture using CUPS and MQTT

Data collected through the IRIS LoRaWAN infrastructure is integrated into the SONEXA platform using CUPS and MQTT protocols.

This integration enables Iwik to centralise remote meter reading data within its existing software environment for energy monitoring and billing applications.

RESULTS: Optimised coverage and simplified infrastructure

The deployment of IRIS gateways quickly delivered significant results:

  • 95% coverage of the 800 meters using only 5 gateways
  • Stable radio performance with spreading factors ranging from SF7 to SF10
  • A reduction in the number of gateways initially planned
  • A simplified infrastructure despite a challenging urban environment

At this stage, around 40 meters remain outside the network coverage area. Iwik plans to add one or two additional gateways to achieve full site coverage and meet the expected energy consumption reduction targets.

Iwik's Feedback

Iwik had already been using Webdyn solutions for Wireless M-Bus remote meter reading projects. This positive experience naturally influenced the decision to select IRIS gateways for this new LoRaWAN deployment.

“In very large buildings, we can definitely see ourselves increasingly using Adeunis IRIS gateways. Even when fewer meters are installed, a single gateway can cover an entire property, whereas previously a much larger infrastructure would have been required.”

With the LoRa solution from Webdyn and Adeunis, we have found a technology that enables very high read-out rates, even in buildings with challenging radio conditions. At the same time, we significantly reduce the need for additional gateways and reading infrastructure, which represents an important step towards more efficient and cost-effective meter data collection.”

The choice of IRIS gateways is therefore part of a broader continuity strategy, with a clear objective: delivering a reliable communication infrastructure in a complex radio environment.

Looking ahead: a foundation for future LoRaWAN deployments

Following the success of this project, Iwik plans to extend the use of LoRaWAN to additional buildings.

This deployment demonstrates the ability of IRIS gateways to support reliable remote metering infrastructures in challenging urban environments while optimising the number of gateways required.
