Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital (CHU)

The Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital, a leading healthcare provider in the western part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, fulfils three key missions: care, education, and research across its three hospital sites.

Operating at the highest level of care provision, it serves as a referral centre for medicine, surgery, and obstetrics. With 1,920 beds and treatment places across its facilities, it features 15 departments covering the full spectrum of healthcare needs, supported by advanced medical and technical platforms for diagnostics and interventional medicine.

At the same time, it trains healthcare professionals through 12 schools and institutes. It also provides medical, technical, and logistical support to 14 public healthcare facilities within the Allier Puy-de-Dôme hospital network, for which it acts as the lead institution.

CHALLENGE : Energy Management in a Public Healthcare Facility

The Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital aims to monitor and optimise its consumption (water, electricity, temperature, etc.) by tracking its meters.

Another requirement is the ability to use mobile meters that can be easily deployed for temporary installation analyses.

Faced with the complexity and cost of wired connections for transmitting metering data, the hospital chose IoT. A wireless communication solution significantly simplifies the deployment of additional metering points. Thanks to a wide range of sensors, IoT can address nearly all monitoring needs.

SOLUTION : Connected Sensors to Improve Energy Management and Monitor Ambient Temperature

Several IoT sensors were deployed across the hospital’s installations:

  • Pulse sensors – PULSE: collect water meter readings and monitor consumption
  • Modbus sensors – MODBUS: retrieve electricity consumption data (e.g. DIRIS meters), enabling real-time monitoring of equipment or specific services
  • 4–20 mA sensor – ANALOG: used on steam meters for energy analysis of sterilisation processes
  • Temperature sensor – COMFORT: monitors office temperatures in real time, providing an accurate view of variations based on multiple parameters. This data helps identify the most suitable solutions to improve working conditions
  • Data concentrator: collects all data and makes it available via BACnet to the energy management system
